Comparison: “Unicorn Pee” Polishes // Max Factor Fantasy Fire (2011), Girly Bits Shift Happens (2012 & 2017), Ethereal Lacquer Worlds Apart (2018)

Hi everyone! Today I have a real quick comparison post of some Unicorn Pee toppers. Unicorn Pee is a hard to find pigment that shifts red to green to gold. The original pigment has been discontinued so it is getting harder to find.

Ethereal Lacquer just reopened her store in the last week or two after quite a few years and the first polish she brought back was Worlds Apart. I guess this was a fan favorite but I was not that familiar with Ethereal Lacquer back in the day so I don’t have an original bottle to compare for you, but I do have a lot of other Unicorn Pee toppers and polishes. The maker of Ethereal has said she used double the amount of original UP in this 2018 batch so the base color is quite a bit more sheer than it was. I just got my Worlds Apart in the mail today and wanted to share with you what it’s like.

Today I will show you a comparison with the original Max Factor Fantasy Fire from 2011, Girly Bits Shift Happens both the original from 2012 and the re-release from 2017, and the new release of Ethereal Lacquer Worlds Apart 2018. I have these both over a black base and a purple base.

At the bottom of the post, I also have a comparison of Tonic Curio, KBShimmer Let’s Slang, Ethereal Lacquer Worlds Apart, Tonic Serendipity, and KBShimmer So Jelly all on their own.

I have quite a few pictures today.

The order of the swatch wheel is:

  • 1 coat Fantasy Fire (2011) over black
  • 1 coat Fantasy Fire (2011) over purple
  • 2 coats Ethereal Worlds Apart (2018) over black
  • 2 coats Ethereal Worlds Apart (2018) over purple
  • 1 coat New Girly Bits Shift Happens (2017) over black
  • 1 coat New Girly Bits Shift Happens (2017) over purple
  • 1 coat Old Shift Happens (2012) over black

My thoughts on the new Ethereal Lacquer Worlds Apart compared to these others: Worlds Apart has a much finer UP pigment than any of these other UP polishes which gives the polish a much smoother and almost “lit from within” look when applied over a base color. It sparkles in the sun but it’s a more subdued sparkle. With all of the other polishes it looks like it’s a topper sitting on top of the base color. That makes all those others appear more sparkly. In my own opinion it’s worth getting the Worlds Apart (if you find it) just to have another choice in your UP toppers. I really love them all.

Here is the order for my other comparison today:

Comparison of 'Unicorn Pee' Polishes -- Shift Happens, Fantasy Fire, Worlds Apart (2)
Tonic Curio, KBShimmer Let’s Slang, Ethereal Lacquer Worlds Apart, Tonic Serendipity, and KBShimmer So Jelly

  • 2 coats Tonic Curio
  • 2 coats KBShimmer Let’s Slang
  • 2 coats Ethereal Lacquer Worlds Apart
  • 2 coats Tonic Serendipity
  • 2 coats KBShimmer So Jelly

It would take a lot of coats (if it were even possible) for Worlds Apart to build up any sort of opacity on it’s own. It is definitely a topper. It looks kind of opaque below, but it really isn’t at all!

  1. Do we ever get tired of UP polishes? lol I always think that comparison posts help dissuade me from buying polishes, but on the contrary, I end up wanting them all. I just ordered World’s Apart and hope I love it! 🙂

    1. Yes Cynthia, you are right! Instead of us saying, “oh I have something similar” we’re all just grabby hands, especially when it comes to UP! Thanks for checking out my blog and I too hope you love Worlds Apart when you get it!!
