Hi everyone! Today I have my nail swatches and review of the new/upcoming China Glaze Paint It Black Collection for Halloween 2018. I found this while scrolling through the internet the other day. I have a post up with bottle shots and swatch wheel photos, if you want to see those click HERE. I am not affiliated with China Glaze.

I have so many notes written down from when I swatched these colors! This will be a long post with a lot of photos!

The Paint It Black Collection has 6 polishes. I will just jump right in in alphabetical order.
- Ash & Burn – This is a lighter black base with gold or copper micro glitter. This had an excellent formula. It is on the thick side, so one coat may be enough if you paint carefully. It dries shiny but with a bit of a texture from all the glitter. Top coat really makes the sparkle come out. You’ll need two coats of topcoat to make it perfectly smooth. I used 2 coats of color plus 2 coats of topcoat.

Maliboo-Boo – This is a black linear holographic. Yay for China Glaze adding another holographic polish to it’s lineup! This also had a thicker formula. You don’t want to overload the brush with polish and don’t go over the same spot while painting the first coat or you will get lifting and balding. Do thinner, easy pressure coats and you won’t have a problem. The second coat goes on much easier and smoother and deepened the color a bit. I used 2 coats without top coat for these photos.

- Night and Slay – This is a clear base loaded with black and silver micro glitter and larger chunky silver holo glitter. This dries textured due to all that glitter, but not overly textured. Two coats of topcoat smoothed it out for me. I layered this over black so inside this looks like a lot of silver glitter and when you get outside or in bright light the holo glitter comes out. I bet this would be great layered over other colors too, then you’d get to see the black glitter as well. It can also be layered on it’s own in two coats to be opaque. My photos show 1 coat over Shadies & Gentlemen without topcoat on all my fingers except my ring finger has 2 coats on it’s own (no undies) with 2 coats of topcoat.

- Pret-A-Potion – This is a clear base loaded with matte black micro glitter. I wasn’t sure what to do with this one! Of course it wouldn’t show up over all the dark polishes in this collection, so I layered it over a few different base colors. This did need a little bit of a learning curve to get it applied. I did one coat of each undie color and a layer of topcoat so this glitter would not sink in. With the white on my index finger, I thought I was doing a thin coat of glitter but it ended up being not thin enough! So for the rest of my fingers I wiped off ALL of the polish into the bottle neck then just swiped the brush up the neck to get just a little bit of glitter on the brush. Watch for a drip coming down the brush stem to mess you up! These photos are just 1 coat of undies and 1 coat of glitter with just a little dabbing here and there, mainly on the tips of my nails. The index and middle have 2 coats of topcoat and the ring and pinky have no topcoat.
Here are the “undies” I used…

The opacity I achieved without really trying on my index finger above gave me the thought to try this on it’s own too. For the following photos I have 1 thin coat with no undies on my ring finger and 2 coats with no undies on my middle finger. It really is opaque enough to wear on it’s own in 2 coats.

Shadies & Gentlemen – This is a matte black. This had a good formula. It dries quickly but not so fast that you have trouble applying it. I did a thin first coat and for some reason I got cracks like a crackle polish would make. It may have been something I did. Maybe it didn’t like my basecoat because I had a gel overlay on my pinky finger (so didn’t use basecoat) and that one did not crack. It also did not crack on my swatch wheel the other day so this may be user error! I did a thicker second coat and it covered all the cracks except on my index finger, that one re-cracked. I added a glossy topcoat to just my ring finger.
Here’s what one coat looked like…

- Wicked Liquid – This is a blackened golden green chrome like shimmer. This had a little bit of a tricky formula. You have to try to do super thin coats (wipe off almost all of the polish from the brush) and don’t press hard or go over the same area or you will get lifting on the first coat. In my opinion it is chrome like and brushstrokes and imperfections will show, especially on the first coat. The second coat is much easier to apply and it hides all those imperfections from the first coat. You still want to do a thin second coat. This will dry a little dull but glossy topcoat will bring out the shimmer. I love this color so it is worth a little extra trouble! I used 2 coats plus topcoat.

One last look at the whole collection collage. These photos were all taken outside in the sun…

This is a nice Halloween collection! My favorites are Wicked Liquid, Ash & Burn, Maliboo-Boo, and I like the glitter Pret-A-Potion. I was not a fan of Shadies & Gentlemen.
So what do you all think?? Let me know in the comments, I’d love to hear from you!
Also if there are any comparisons you’d like to see, make a comment and if I have the polish, I will compare them for you!
Well, there we have it!
