OPI Holiday 2018 – Disney’s The Nutcracker and the Four Realms Collection // Swatch and Review

Hi everyone! Today I have my swatch and review of  all 15 polishes in the new OPI Holiday 2018 collection! This is based on the Disney movie The Nutcracker and the Four Realms. I bought this collection at PolishPick.com. You can find them HERE.

I have a lot to show you and A LOT of pictures! I usually break these collections up into two posts and you will see why here. I like to show off each polish in different lighting so I end up with so many photos! I decided to go ahead and post it all in one post, but it is long! Let me know in the comments if you have a preference for large collections, all in one post or break it up into two.  Let’s get started!

OPI Holiday 2018 Disney's The Nutcracker and the Four Realms Collection.

 

There are 15 total polishes in this collection. You have the regular 12 piece collection plus a mini 3 piece glitter collection for the holidays. Let’s just dive right in!

  • Berry Fairy Fun – This is a purple base with sparkly pink shimmer. It’s a little runny, be careful not to overload the brush. It goes on smooth without any streaking. You’ll want 2-3 coats. I used 3 coats without topcoat. It dries very shiny and smooth. This is one of my favorites from this collection.

  • Black to Reality – This is a black base with red shimmer which gives this an overall vampy brown look. It applies smooth and easy. I used 2 coats without topcoat. Inside it just looks dark, the shimmer is not overpowering but does come out when you get into bright light or sun. I have a quick comparison at the bottom of the post with a couple other OPI’s…

  • Candied Kingdom – This is a brighter red creme/crelly. It goes on smooth and easy, no streaks or pooling. It dries shiny. It’s a nice Christmas red. I used 2 coats without topcoat

  • Dancing Keeps Me on My Toes – This is a frosty “glistening snow” silvery white with silver micro glitter. This has a lot of brushstrokes! The formula is good and if I had a makeup sponge to sponge on the third coat I would have really loved this one I think. I love the little silver sparkles in it! I used 3 thin coats with topcoat.

  • Dazzling Dew Drop – This is a yellow gold with gold shimmer. This one has a similar formula to Dancing Keeps Me On My Toes, so there is probably brushstrokes with this one too but it is very shiny and sparkly so you don’t notice them as much here. This had a good formula I used 2 very thin coats without topcoat. If you like gold polish this is a very pretty one! I also surprising love this with Tinker, Thinker, Winker on top.   • Dreams Need Clara-fication – This is a baby blue creme. This was a little bit streaky on the first coat, that may have been partly in part because I had a wonky brush. The second coat went on smoother and evened out pretty well. I love this color even though it’s not groundbreaking. If you need a baby blue/periwinkle in your collection this is a pretty one. I used 2 coats without topcoat. It dries very shiny.

  • Envy the Adventure – This is a shamrock or emerald green creme/crelly. This had an excellent formula. It applied smooth and easy, there was no streaking, running or pooling. I used 2 easy coats with topcoat. This does dry shiny.

  • Ginger’s Revenge – This is a deeper red/maroon creme/crelly. This had an excellent formula. It applied very smooth and easy without streaking, running or pooling. This dries shiny. Again, this is not a groundbreaking color, but I love this one! I used 2 coats without topcoat.

  • Lavendare to Find Courage – This is a pinky lilac creme. I had just a little bit of streaking on the first coat, really just on one nail. For the most part it was very smooth, it doesn’t run or pool. I used 2 coats with topcoat. It dries shiny. This was hard to photograph. I did end up having to color correct my photos to make it look right. So on my monitor, these photos look just like what it looks like in real life.

  • March in Uniform – This is dark navy creme/crelly. It applies smooth and easy. There was no streaking, running or pooling into the cuticles. It dries shiny. Inside this may look black in some lighting. I used 2 easy coat without topcoat.

  • Tinker, Thinker, Winker? – This is a silver holographic topcoat. This will build to be opaque in 2-3 coats though! Yet when you put one coat over a base color it is still easy to see what color it’s over. This has a great formula. It dries smooth and shiny. I have a comparison at the bottom with Revlon Holographic Pearls.

First I have 3 coats on it’s own (2 coats on pinky nail) without topcoat…

  • Toying with Trouble – This is a pink raspberry creme/crelly. This had a very smooth, even first coat. There was no streaking but it did run into my cuticles a little bit. This will dry very shiny. I used 2 coats without topcoat. This was impossible to photograph correctly. My pictures were all to coral or red, this is a true pink raspberry color. The photo under the Ottlight is pretty true to color.

  • Dreams On A Silver Platter – This is a clear base with medium matte white hex glitter, a couple of sizes of shiny silver glitter and some gold flakie dust shimmer.
  • Gold Key To The Kingdom – This is a clear base with medium matte white hex glitter, shiny gold slitter in a couple of sizes and some gold flakie dust shimmer.
  • I Pull The Strings – This is a clear base with matte beige (or light pink) hex glitter, shiny gold glitter in a couple of sizes and red (or rose gold) and gold flakie dust shimmer. I didn’t realize that was red flakie dust until I was cropping my photos.

All three of these had good formulas. A lot of glitter comes out on the brush without a lot of clear base so you don’t end up with a gloppy mess. The glitter comes out easily but you do need to maneuver it around on the nail a little bit.

Comparisons:

I thought Tinker, Thinker, Winker was similar to Revlon Holographic Pearls. They are a similar look but the Revlon is chunkier while TTW is smoother and a little more opaque. There is also a linear flame you can see in TTW along with the scattered look. These are a bit more different in person than my photos show.

Here is 1 coat of Revlon Holographic Pearls on my middle nail and 1 coat of OPI Tinker, Thinker, Winker on my ring finger (over OPI Black to Reality):

I also thought I had a few things that looked close to Black to Reality. These do look similar in the bottles, but that is where the similarities end.  On this wheel I have 2 coats of: Black to Reality, Every Month Is Oktoberfest, Germanicure (this has 3 or 4 coats), Royal Rajah Ruby. The closest is Germanicure but that is much more sheer. That sheerness makes the shimmer stand out much better, but you need 3 or 4 coats to build it up. I’d say none of these are dupes!

I had a request on Instagram to compare OPI March In Uniform from this Nutcracker Collection to OPI Chills Are Multiplying from the summer’s Grease Collection. These are pretty different. March is a darker navy, with a hint of blurple, creme and Chills is a brighter, more translucent navy and it has blue shimmer.

Another Comparison request. Someone wanted to see OPI Candied Kingdom from this 2018 Holiday Nutcracker collection vs OPI Cinnamon Sweet from the 2014 Holiday Gwen Stefani collection. These are verrry close! If I’m being super picky, Cinnamon Sweet seems like it may have like one drop of brown in it. It’s off the tiniest bit but it is minuscule! I’d call these dupes!

For Elizabeth in the comments. She was wondering what I Pull the Strings would look like over I March In Uniform.  I think it looks good. March is a very dark blue and you mostly see the glitter as gold (although there are some matte beige or pink ones too) and I think blue and gold look good together. Hope this helps you!!

  5. I loved this post ! I prefer one long one, over two shorter ones
    The comparisons you made were the ones I would have asked for! Except I did wonder if toying with trouble is as cool as I’m India mood for love or more like Essie Funny face or mod Square or infinite shine girl without limits ( the ones that I have)
    And polish pick is already sold out of thinker,thinker winker

      Toying With Trouble was so hard to photograph correctly! Unfortunately, I don’t have any of the ones you mentioned to compare it to!! Sorry about that!

      Wow! Sold out already?! I think Polish Pick is expecting more inventory in if you wanted to wait, or I’m sure there are other online and in person stores you can find it at. I think the promo pictures of Tinker, Thinker, Winker had everyone hoping for a white holo so they probably all jumped on that one right away!

  7. Loved the samples and all the comparisons. Prefer 1 long post as well. This is the first time I’ve seen you. I’m not on social media and not very internet savvy. Wish you could tell me a current dupe for OPI Ginger Bells. It is my absolute favorite and suited my coloring better than any other polish. Great Job!!

    1. Hi Debbie! I’m glad you found me! I don’t have Ginger Bells and looking online it seems like things I thought would be close are not that close. You could look at OPI It’s A Piazza Cake, OPI Schnapps Out Of It, or Sally Hansen Ginger Zinger to see if you think any of those are close enough.

  10. You have done an incredible amount of hard work and dedicated many hours of your own time to help us all make decisions. I am sure everyone truly appreciates your amazing efforts and I certainly do. I have just bought Tinker Winker Thinker and am rather disappointed that it only really shimmers as it should in natural sunlight. I have only tried it as a top coat over another dark OPI red but it simply doesn’t work for me. It looks patchy and uneven despite shaking the bottle really well and applying carefully (or so I thought). Perhaps I didn’t put a thin enough coat as it seems to have a white base that almost obscures the colour underneath? I hoped it would have a clear base that looks absolutely perfect over any colour, like my absolute favourite OPI topper, I Don’t Speak Meak. I have also bought Dazzling Dew Drops which looks gorgeous in the bottle but I have not yet tried it. x

    1. Hi Ruth! Thank you for finding my blog and your kind words. I’m sorry you weren’t as happy with Tinker, Thinker, Winker as you thought you’d be. You could try adding a little bit of nail polish thinner to your bottle (Orly makes a good one, available at Sally Beauty) and see if that helps with the patchiness/unevenness. Also apply a very light-handed thin coat if using it over another color.

      I hope you enjoy Dazzling Dew Drops. Try it with a (very thin) coat of Tinker over top too.

      1. Thanks so much for your helpful advice which I shall try. What is the best thing to keep your nails clean and grease/oil free with, between coats while doing your manicure? Sometimes we can end up doing 5 or six coats in total and just touching your hair, skin or a pet can put grease/oil on your nails, which causes unsightly bubbling. x

          1. I don’t know of any wipes you could use.

            I usually either do my manicures all in one seating (while playing on the computer) or if anything, I will do a basecoat and leave that for awhile to dry then before painting on the color I just wash and dry my hands. Nothing special. Some people wipe with rubbing alcohol or remover before painting to make sure the nail beds are clean. Of course you couldn’t use remover between coats and I don’t know if alcohol would mess it up or not as I’ve never tried it. I apologize I’m not much help to you with this!

            Since you mentioned you only use OPI products I wanted to mention that OPI also makes a nail polish thinner. I would assume it is available in England.
